Once Upon a Mattress
Every year the Wash U medical students put on a musical. It is entirely student run. The directors, producers, costume makers, cast, orchestra, scenery construction crew . . . everyone is a student. They aren't the most fabulous shows in the world, but they are surprisingly good. The shows are chosen over the summer and cast in the fall. Then the students only practice on Saturdays throughout the year so as not to interfere with classes. Third year students usually can't do the musical because they are far too busy with crazy, unpredictable clerkship schedules, so this year Logan didn't audition to take part. A few weeks ago the director called him to say that one of their supporting leads, the minstrel, had dropped out because of a family emergency, and they were hoping that Logan may be willing and able to step in and rescue them. Shockingly, his schedule right now worked out so that he wasn't going to be on call for any of the show nights. He was thrilled. He told me that he'd been harboring a secret hope that he could somehow do the show this year, so his wish was granted. He got to not only be in the show, but to have a large part in the show, and all without having to go to practices every Saturday throughout the school year! Now that is the way to be in a musical! Predictibly, he was excellent and his beautiful voice really stood out. Callum and I spent the week hanging around dress rehearsal and Callum was dubbed the official "musical baby" of this year's show. Our friends the Browns babysat Callum on Friday night so that I could attend the show with our other friends the Haslams (see picture below). Thanks to both families for your support!
ANNOUNCEMENT, ANNOUNCEMENT:
An Important Decision Has Been Made!
Logan has finally decided what he wants to do with the rest of his life. He has chosen a medical specialty to pursue: he is going to do a residency in general surgery. That's right, my husband is going to be a surgeon. On one hand, that is really fun to say. On the other hand, he is going to vanish from our lives for quite some time! Sigh. Surgery residencies are notorious for being the most time consuming and difficult. In fact, one of the residents that Logan was working under during his surgery rotations this year actually said to him, "If you can imagine yourself doing anything but surgery and being happy . . . do it." Wow. And yet, he loves surgery. I am nervous about how I will deal with his demanding residency, but the decision was made carefully and prayerfully, so we both have to just trust that it is all going to work out. A surgery residency is typically 5 - 7 years long, depending on whether or not he decides to do any research-based years, and then he will do a fellowship if he decides to further specialize. He loved his trauma surgery rotations, so right now he is leaning toward specializing in trauma surgery. It is strange to be more than halfway done with medical school and yet so far away from the end of his training and the beginning of our real life with a real job and a steady home base that we actually get to choose. Sigh. Again. BUT . . . we are both excited that he has finally made a decision about what he wants to do with his life. We can't wait until next March when we find out where his residency will take place!
Best Thing Since I Last Blogged: I AM NOW ALL CAUGHT UP!!! HOORAY!!!!

Don't you love those encouraging senior residents? Pete's first week, 2 chiefs told him that if they could go back, they wouldn't do it. Um, thanks for telling me NOW!!!
You'll be awesome...you're so independent and "together" and the times when you're not together, you can throw Callum in the car and go out for ice cream. That's what I usually do when I hit my breaking point. It helps.
Congrats to Logan! It's so exciting to have a decision made!
Hooray for doing the musical! I'm sure Logan was fantastic.
And as for choosing general surgery? In Daniel's words, "He'll be great at that. We need people like him doing it - that's awesome!" I'm sure it will be busy and stressful and crazy, but if he loves it, it's going to be the best decision! Congrats!
